The Music
Sonata No. 3 in C Major, Op. 2 No. 3 – A work of dazzling brilliance and grand scope, this sonata showcases Beethoven’s early genius with its fiery technical demands, lyrical slow movement, and effervescent humor in the finale. Kim’s playing highlights the virtuosic brilliance and operatic drama, balancing youthful energy with thoughtful phrasing.
Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53 “Waldstein” – One of Beethoven’s most heroic and radiant sonatas, the Waldstein bursts with dazzling runs, harmonic innovations, and orchestral textures. Kim’s interpretation captures its relentless energy, luminous lyricism, and transcendent final movement, where the ethereal trills and glowing harmonies create a sense of weightless triumph.
Sonata No. 26 in E-flat Major, Op. 81a “Les Adieux” – A deeply personal work reflecting Beethoven’s sorrow and hope during the departure and return of his patron, Archduke Rudolph. Kim sensitively navigates its poignant farewell (Lebewohl), turbulent absence (Abwesenheit), and joyful reunion (Wiedersehen), illuminating Beethoven’s introspective depth and emotional storytelling.
With technical brilliance and deep musical insight, Julian Jaeyoung Kim brings Beethoven’s vision to life, offering an emotionally gripping and intellectually profound listening experience.
